This ring was a great adventure for us. Our client had seen one similar to this and wanted to use her own stone rather than spending many thousands for the one in the ring that she had seen. I spoke with Mike, one of our better designers and craftsmen and he told me that we would need to have tapered sapphires custom cut to make this design, otherwise there would be unsightly gaps between the stones as we went around the center stone.
I searched all over the world for such stones with NO luck what so ever, but did finally find after about three weeks a house in New York that would custom cut them for us. I actually paid about three times as much to have the cutting done as I paid for the sapphires and my client was VERY happy that I passed that on to her at my actual cost.
Fortunately we had a few extras made as the very last stone broke as the bezel was lowered and we actually had one of the stones trimmed a fraction of a mm for a perfect fit for the final stone. Our client was passing through Boise a few days after it was finished so we had her to the house for BBQ steak and the joyous unveiling of a months long project.
I think you might agree with her that the wait was well worth it!
